NEW DELHI: The Congress and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have resumed talks to discuss the seat sharing formula for the seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital, sources said on Thursday. The speculation of a tie-up between both the parties got a boost with AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh meeting All India Congress Committee (AICC) incharge of Delhi PC Chacko on Wednesday evening. The ruling AAP has proposed to give two seats to Congress which has instead demanded three — New Delhi, Chandni Chowk and North East Delhi, sources in both the parties claimed. “The two leaders discussed the seat sharing formula with AAP offering two seats to the Congress,” a source said. Chacko will convey the offer from the AAP to Congress president Rahul Gandhi who will take a final call on the issue in next few days, the source said. The rationale behind an alliance between the two parties is that together they polled more votes than the BJP which swept the 2014 Lok Sabha elections winning all the seven seats in Delhi. The AAP has been batting for tie-up, with Congress citing the need to defeat the BJP and replace the Modi government in the national interest. However, Delhi Congress is a divided house, with its president Sheila Dikshit and her three working presidents along with some other leaders opposing a tie-up with the ruling party. Dikshit met Gandhi over the issue twice and conveyed her message to him. After a meeting with Gandhi last month she claimed there was “unanimity” in the party against an alliance with the AAP. Rajesh Lilothia, working president of Delhi Congress said that alliance will “ruin” the party in Delhi and this stand was clearly stated by Dikshit in her meeting with Rahul Gandhi on April 2.
New Delhi: Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for alleging that late Rajiv Gandhi used INS Viraat as “personal taxi” on a family vacation, the Congress on Thursday said, “He (Modi) is a “serial liar” who does not have the courage to fight elections on issues such as unemployment and demonetisation.”Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that retired Indian Navy Vice Admiral Vinod Pasricha has clarified that the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was on an official visit on INS Viraat and not on a vacation. Also Read – 2019 most peaceful festive season for J&K: Jitendra Singh”But facts don’t matter to Modi. He doesn’t have anything to talk about his own achievements. Rahul Gandhi has been challenging him for the last six months now to debate on Rafale deal, demonetisation, unemployment, but Modi does not have the courage to speak,” Khera said while talking to reporters at a press conference. Taking a swipe at Modi for making allegations against Rajiv Gandhi who is no more, Khera said has anyone read about former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru saying that his next election will be against Mughal emperor Humayun or Indira Gandhi making her entire campaign against Queen Victoria. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroad”We are now hearing that. Modi ji tells us that 30 years ago Rajiv Gandhi went for a holiday in INS Viraat. Prime Minister is a serial liar. A senior official has exposed his lies. Vice Admiral (retd) Vinod Pasricha appeared on channels some time back and stated that this is a lie and the then PM was on an official visit and not on a holiday,” he said. Khera further said that Modi is the first Prime Minister who asks for votes on his “failures” and Pulwama was an example of this. “It was a big intelligence failure. We lost our soldiers due to this monumental failure in internal security,” Khera alleged. The Congress leader also dared Modi to name the people he takes on foreign trips. “We have seen the campaign, there has been no mention of demonetisation. But you tremble when it is mentioned and hide behind Rajiv Gandhi,” he said Khera also slammed the Prime Minister for raising the Bofors issue saying it was a BJP-led government at the Centre when the Delhi High Court gave a clean chit to Rajiv Gandhi. It was Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government that decided against appealing the order, he said, adding, “We will debate on Bofors provided you are ready to debate on Rafale.” Wajahat Habibullah, who was the then administrator of Lakshwadeep, has also stated that INS Viraat was indeed stationed in Lakshwadeep but the Gandhis were not holidaying aboard the ship. Habibullah, a retired IAS officer, recalled how Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi landed in Lakshwadeep in a government chopper. “INS Viraat was in the sea for the PM’s backup security. The Prime Minister needs backup security and in the middle of the ocean, there’s no other option other than warships.” Agreeing with Habibullah’s comments, former Navy chief Admiral L Ramdas said that no ships were “specially diverted” for the personal use of the Gandhi family, neither were there any foreigners. Ramdas further added that he also has a picture of that day. “The prime minister was at Trivandrum as a chief guest for National Games prize distribution. He was going to Lakshadweep on official duty to chair a meeting of Islands Development Authority. This meet held alternately in Lakshadweep and Andamans… I then hosted a dinner for the prime minister that night. And there is a photo to confirm this,” he said in a statement. read more

‘Madiba,’ as Mr. Mandela was affectionately known, passed this afternoon at his home in Johannesburg. He was 95. “Nelson Mandela was a giant for justice and a down-to-earth human inspiration,” Mr. Ban said at UN Headquarters in New York. “On behalf of the United Nations, I extend my deepest condolences to the people of South Africa and especially to Nelson Mandela’s family, and indeed our global family.” Mr. Ban noted that many people worldwide were greatly influenced by Mr. Mandela’s selfless struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom. “He touched our lives in deeply personal ways. At the same time, no one did more in our time to advance the values and aspirations of the United Nations.” Ban Ki-moon speaks to correspondents on the death of Nelson Mandela. Credit: UNTV“Nelson Mandela showed what is possible for our world and within each one of us – if we believe, dream and work together for justice and humanity,” said the Secretary-General. “His moral force was decisive in dismantling the system of apartheid,” said Mr. Ban. “Remarkably, he emerged from 27 years of detention without rancour, determined to build a new South Africa based on dialogue and reconciliation.” Mr. Mandela devoted his life to the service of his people and humanity, and he did so at great personal sacrifice, said the Secretary-General, who said he was moved by the late leader’s “selflessness and deep sense of shared purpose” when the two men met in 2009. “Let us continue each day to be inspired by his lifelong example and his call to never cease working for a better and more just world.” Recalling his memories of meeting Mr. Mandela, the Secretary-General said he had been deeply touched and inspired. “When I praised him for his lifelong contribution to end apartheid he said ‘It is not only me, but hundreds and hundreds of known and unknown people that contributed.’ That has stuck with me ever since.” read more

ROBBIE KEANE SAYS he knew nothing about his family ties to Morrissey until the singer shocked him with the news last month.Ireland’s record goalscorer and The Smiths’ frontman met in Los Angeles when Morrissey showed up at an LA Galaxy pre-season match and afterwards stunned Keane by revealing that the two are in fact distant relatives. It emerged that Keane’s late grandfather and Morrissey’s father are cousins while the singer’s mother, Elizabeth, lived alongside Keane’s family on Captains Road in Crumlin.“In filial terms the Irish blood, English heart genetic between Robbie and I is evident,” Morrissey wrote afterwards on fan zine True to You. “His chin is my chin, my chin is his.”Speaking in Dublin today, where he was launching the “Future Football” partnership between McDonald’s and the FAI, Keane said that the news came as a complete surprise to him.“I didn’t know obviously until he told me. Then I asked my mother, ‘Why did you not tell me this? Surely someone in the family, in the 32 years I’ve been around, surely someone must have said it.’“The uncles have been saying it for years but she didn’t think to tell me.”Since meeting the two have kept in touch with Keane — who was once famously spied at a karaoke night in Malahide pub Gibney’s — getting to know his “cousin’s” music.“He’s given me CDs of himself — I asked him — and I went to see his gig in the Staples Centre a few weeks ago in LA.“I wouldn’t say we’ve become very close but we speak to each other, send each other texts and emails. He’s a very nice guy and I’ve got a lot of time for him. He’s a very interesting guy and he certainly loves Ireland, I know that.”There is a chance, Keane added, that the man who famously sang about his “Irish blood, English heart” might pay a visit to watch the national team in action some time soon.“He loves watching us. Apple is awfully proud of the iPhone 5S, and is particularly excited about the revolution in smartphone security it is helping to usher in thanks to Touch ID. The biometric sensor had some privacy advocates worked up, however. They didn’t like the thought of a scan of your fingerprint being saved on a smartphone. Could someone steal your phone, extract the image, and 3D-print an artificial thumb? While Hollywood would probably like you to believe the answer is yes, it’s actually a resounding no. Apple has clarified that the Touch ID sensor doesn’t store any images on the iPhone 5S.That’s not how biometric devices like the Touch ID sensor work. What you’ve seen in the movies — the red laser scanning down a thumb and rendering an exact replica on a screen — isn’t what happens when you place your thumb on the Touch ID. When you enroll a fingerprint on a biometric device, it’s fairly common for the enrollment software to show you something similar as visual feedback. It lets you see that a scan was good enough to use. What the sensor is actually recording is much different.Instead of a high-resolution image, Touch ID is capturing specific characteristics of your thumbprint. They are converted by an algorithm into binary data and encrypted. Theoretically, there’s no way for someone to convert the 0s and 1s back into an image — even if they could break the encryption. The rules might be different for the NSA, since it’s always possible that they negotiated some kind of back door access. Then again, they’d probably just go straight for the personal data on your iPhone 5S instead. read more
Stay on target Fiber-Based Six-Pack Can Rings Offer Eco-Friendly Alternative to PlasticEven More Kellogg’s Cereal Gets Re-Born as Craft Beer LG makes a lot of different products. Really, the list of things it doesn’t make might be shorter than the list of things it does. There are gaps, naturally, but home brewing is no longer one of them.Yes, beer drinkers, LG wants to help you brew your own beer! The company pulled back the curtains on a countertop brewing appliance — fittingly called LG HomeBrew — this week and they’ll be taking it to Las Vegas in January to show it off to CES attendees.LG’s machine prioritizes convenience above all else. It’s a Keurig-like system that can produce up to five gallons at time. To brew a batch of beer you simply pop in a pod, add water, and press a button. The appliance maintains temperature and pressure levels to ensure optimal brewing conditions.Like many of LG’s other appliances, HomeBrew has built-in wireless connectivity. You can check on the progress of your beer at any time by launching the companion app on your phone or tablet. There’s no need to transfer to a keg or bottles for conditioning. The HomeBrew automatically pumps your beer into its storage chamber where it’s chilled and ready to dispense. Pull the tap handle. Fill your mug. Repeat!HomeBrew even sanitizes itself when the brewing process is complete. All you have to do is add a bit of hot water.LG’s press release pitches the system as a hassle-free way for anyone to brew craft beer at home. Calling what the HomeBrew produces craft beer seems like a stretch, but it certainly seems like it might be the easiest way to make your own freshly-brewed beer at home.Initially you’ll be limited to five varieties: American IPA, American pale ale, Belgian witbier, Czech pilsner and English stout. If the system proves popular (and the price is right) enough LG may offer additional capsules down the road.More on Geek.com:This Italian City Gives You Free Beer for BikingCarlsberg Is Gluing Beer Cans Together to Help Save the PlanetYou’ll Have to Travel Canada for Weed Beer read more
In recent weeks, IAG has heard unsubstantiated rumors that officials from Chinese online poker and board game company Ourgame International Holdings Ltd had been arrested in the wake of a mainland government crackdown on online poker applications. Those rumors have now been at least partially confirmed with Ourgame – owner of the World Poker Tour and one of China’s leading poker application operators – revealing that six employees of its subsidiary Beijing Lianzhong Co, Ltd were detained by authorities in Henan Province for using the company’s platform to “engage in personal activities contrary to the gambling laws of the PRC.” World Poker Tour announces 2019 “Asia Swing” in Vietnam, Japan and Korea In a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Ourgame said that six employees had been arrested and “subject to potential prosecution by the public security bureau of Henan Province.” However, the company has quickly distanced itself from the individuals, adding, “None of these six individuals is a director of the company. The company has established a committee to look into this matter and engaged external PRC legal counsel to report to the relevant public security authorities regarding preliminary evidence found relating to such employees’ behavior.“To the extent that any authorities in Henan Province or elsewhere in China request the group’s cooperation, the group will cooperate fully with any such requests. Following their investigation of the situation, including discussions with the relevant authorities, the Company’s PRC legal counsel has opined that the purported illegal activities were related to the personal actions of the relevant individuals and do not involve any illegal actions on the part of the group.“The board of directors of the company wishes to clarify that neither the company nor any member of the group has been notified by any government or regulatory authority in China of the commencement of any investigation or proceedings against them.”It had previously been reported by Chinese media that at least one official from Ourgame was extradited from Thailand to China last month, although this has not been confirmed. The arrests of six employees comes just three weeks after Chinese authorities announced that poker will no longer be recognized as a competitive sport and banned the promotion of Texas Hold’em via social media applications. The ban will require all apps offering any form of social poker game to be shut down and removed from app stores by 1 June. Social media channels such as WeChat will also be banned from promoting any form of Texas Hold’em product.Ourgame released a statement at the time in which it promised to examine and correct its poker offerings in order to satisfy the new regulations. The company said that it had been responsible for providing hundreds of millions of players with “high-end intellectual tournaments and events.“This not only plays an important role in the creation of social, cultural and economic values, it also acts as a bridge between China and the world’s intellectual sports,” it said. “Ourgame will continue to introduce and hold more top-level intellectual sports events and promote the global spread of chess and card culture.“In the future, Ourgame will actively respond to the ‘National Fitness’ strategy, promote the popularization and development of intellectual sports, meet the leisure and entertainment needs of the masses and at the same time, we will consciously assume the responsibility of supervision and control and conduct real-time supervision on violations in the game. We will supervise and clean up, increase monitoring of problem accounts and user behaviors, ensure the healthy, fair and harmonious game environment and jointly promote the standardized and healthy online game market.”Last week, another poker app operator Alisports announced that a new event scheduled for the week of 16 to 20 May, the International Poker Tour Macau, has been cancelled as a direct result of China’s poker crackdown. Across the northernmost tip of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and northwestern Russia live a people who for thousands of years have survived on reindeer herding, hunting and fishing, while living in relative isolation from their neighbors and avoiding assimilation. Evidence indicates that the Sámi People are indigenous to the region, as they have been present in the Fennoscandian area since the Stone Age.Their language belongs to the Uralic group and is related to the history of Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian languages. Their culture, on the other hand, is completely autochtonous, as they have forever lived on the margins of countries which they inhabit.A Sea Sámi man from Norway by Prince Roland Bonaparte, 1884Three Sámi women‘Finnegut from Vadsoe’A Laplander family and sledge dog outside their summer home. Due to the high mortality rate among Norwegians caused by the epidemic, Sámi fishermen were relieved of taxes and were provided with economic incentives, for they had become an important food provider for the Kingdom. The Mountain Sámi, on the other hand, were traditionally involved in reindeer herding and hunting, often leading a nomadic lifestyle synchronized with reindeer migrations. In the 19th century, a significant number of Sámi accepted the Christian Lutheran religion, therefore denouncing their traditional polytheistic and animist beliefs.A photo of the Sámi man Mikel Mikelsen Hetta from Kautokeino, NorwayGirl and goat at a Sámi camp by lake Satisjaure (Satihaure) in LaplandSámi woman with white reindeer. Laws prohibiting their language were enforced across Scandinavia and assimilation was conducted on several occasions, most notably in Norway. The practice of Norweginization was in some cases applied even to the 1950s, depriving Sámi people of education, use of their own language and other forms of discrimination.A Sámi family in Norway around 1900Nordic Sámi people, Lavvu, c. 1900A Sea Sámi man from Norway by Prince Roland Bonaparte, 1884Mountain Sámi. Media outlets that make public sensitive information regarding fatal road accidents before the families of the victims are informed will be named and shamed, the Cyprus Media Complaints Commission (press council), announced on Wednesday. The commission held a meeting last week with media representatives, and press officers of the police and the fire service to discuss how to handle information on serious road accidents.“Handling information on cases involving fatal accidents should be characterised by maximum discretion,” the commission said in an announcement. The meeting was considered necessary after some media outlets had announced very sensitive information that revealed the identity of two victims of a fatal road accident that took place in Nicosia at the end of September, before their families were informed.“The media, unless there are reasons of public interest, are urged to refrain from making early reference to this kind of accidents,” the committee said. “Even in cases when reporting the incident is necessary, this will be strictly restricted to what the police press office considers necessary to announce”.Reporting details concerning fatal road accidents such as names and what caused the accident will be made after police confirm through an announcement that they have informed the close relatives of the victims, the commission said.“Media outlets and journalists ought to avoid reports that intensify human suffering, while mentions to the personal data of victims are deemed as unacceptable,” it said.In case this informal agreement is violated, the commission said that it will name and shame those media outlets that misbehaved. You May LikeLuxury Crossover SUV I Search AdsThese SUVs Are The Cream Of The Crop. The Cyprus Integrity Forum (CIF) has welcomed government efforts to tackle lobbying through a bill promoting transparency in public sector decision making as a means of preventing conflict of interest cases. The bill has recently been sent to parliament for discussion before being tabled to the House plenum to vote. It follows recommendations by Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (Greco) for the introduction of rules for members of parliament on interaction with third parties that may seek to influence the parliamentary process.According to CIF officer Maria Konstantinou, the organisation, involved in the National Action Plan against Corruption, has been trying since 2014 to have lobbying regulated.“We are glad the justice ministry went ahead with its regulation through a bill,” Konstantinou told the Cyprus Mail. She said passing the bill and other ones concerning tackling corruption was very important.According to Konstantinou, lobbying takes its name from the ‘lobby’ of parliament where members gather before and after discussions. The Council of Europe considers that lobbying is the concerted effort to influence policymaking and decision-making by an individual or organisation to obtain a concrete result from government authorities and elected representatives, she said.In a wider sense, she said, the term may refer to public actions (such as demonstrations) by associations, councils, defence groups, think-tanks, non-governmental organisations, lawyers, etc.Lobbying may also include pressure for the protection of financial interests by companies.Cyprus, like many countries, is no stranger to lobbying. One example of lobbying, she said, could be consultations and meetings between an NGO and a state official or a representative of a parliamentary party behind closed doors. Since no one knows of these meetings and what has been discussed, this could lead to corruption. But a minister whose office keeps a lobbyists’ registry, would be able to hold meetings with transparency, she said. The bill currently before parliament provides for the creation of such a record in which all lobbyists who want to hold meetings with state officials and MPs must register. The record will be kept by the independent Authority against Corruption that will be set up as part of the law in question.Individuals and organisations will have to submit their lobbying group and its fields of interest.Prior to a meeting with officials and MPs, they will have to inform the authority in writing on the issues they would like to discuss.
